The process of applying to college takes place between October and February of a student's senior year. Once a college has been selected, the student must provide the following information to the guidance counselors:

I. Download the College Application Checklist

This checklist needs to be completed EVERY time you submit an application to a college.  This must be submitted at least one month prior to an application's deadline.

II. The Completed Application

Applications should be typed whenever possible.  Colleges look at how neatly an application has been completed, and it can count against an applicant. It is preferable to complete the application ONLINE. This gets the application to the college admissions office immediately, and there is often either a fee waiver or a reduced fee for online applications. You can also use the Common Application that is accepted by a number of private schools. Check with Ms. Shamberger or visit www.commonapp.org to see if the schools to which you are applying accept the Common Application. You can also type out your information on the Common App online and send the completed copy through the mail.

III. Essay (If applicable)

Your essay should be prepared very carefully.  It should be typed, double spaced, and contain your name and social security number at the top of each page.  Before submitting your essay to Ms. Shamberger, make sure that it has been proofread and edited by at least one other person.

IV. Letters of Recommendation

Teachers, coaches, and employers are all good candidates for letters of recommendation. You should give a complete list of the schools for which you want an individual to write a letter of recommendation at least a month before the due date. You must also supply these people with a copy of your resume so that they will know what you have been involved in during your high school years.

V. Application Fee

Your application materials are accompanied by an application fee.  The application fee should be in the form or a check or money order and made payable to the college or university to which you are applying.  Please notify your guidance counselor if you are going to be requesting a fee waiver for college applications.

All of the above, along with the college application checklist, must be provided to Ms. Shamberger at least one month before the college's application deadline.  Failure to have the application in on time can jeopardize it getting to your school-of-choice on time.

Once the application checklist and all of the supporting materials are submitted to the guidance counselors, the following information is provided by LCHS:

I. Student Transcript with SAT Scores Your package will include both your SAT I and SAT II scores. There are some schools that will not accept SAT scores from any group other than the Collegeboard, LCHS can then include a copy of your SAT report from the Collegeboard.

II. Counselor's Letter This includes the student's rank, GPA and an evaluation of the student by their counselor.

III. School Profile This is a compilation of LCHS' mission statement, courses offered, and grading policy.

These items, along with those supplied by the student, are then sent to the colleges by the college counseling office. Nothing should be sent directly to the college by the student other than an online application.

If you have any questions about the application process, please contact Ms. Shamberger.
